Immigration to Spain

Spanish citizenship

Spanish citizenship is the final step of the immigration path. Requirements depend on origin, length of residence and family situation.

Main routes

Depending on your case, different residence periods and different paperwork apply.

  • 10 years of legal residence — general rule
  • 2 years — for Ibero-American, Portuguese, Andorran, Filipino, Equatoguinean citizens and Sephardic Jews
  • 1 year — for spouses, children and grandchildren of Spanish citizens
  • Citizenship by origin and under Ley de Memoria Democrática

Exams and documents

Most categories require passing DELE A2 and CCSE, obtaining criminal-record certificates and proving legal residence.

  • DELE A2 — Spanish language (not required for native speakers)
  • CCSE — Constitution and socio-cultural knowledge
  • Certificado de antecedentes penales
  • Legal residence certificate and empadronamiento
